Foundation for Adopting Graves at the
American Cementry at Margraten
The idea to adopt the graves of American liberators originated in February 1945. This was when the "Citizens Committee Margraten" was established. The committee took aim at the establishment of the American cemetery supported by a large-scale adoption action. Of the adopters was expected that they regularly visited the adopted grave, put flowers there, and so we appreciated the contacts maintained with the families in America. The action was widely attended. The first Memorial Day in 1945, all graves were decorated with flowers. In the second Memorial Day - a year later all, then 18,764 graves were adopted. Captain Shomon - the founder of the American cemetery - commended the committee members for all the work that was done. The "Citizens' Committee of Margraten" is partly responsible for that since 1946 got underway on an extensive correspondence between the adoptive parents and the relatives of the fallen. This often resulted in contacts / friendships that still exist today. By aging members of the citizens' committee and the advent of new administration and communication equipment was the work of the committee in 2002 taken over by the previous created Foundation Adoption Graves American Cemetery Margraten. The new foundation is mainly staffed by people who have a relationship with the social and civic life in the municipality Eijsden-Margraten. The Foundation sees its main task the work of the former citizens' committee to continue.. |
