His father William was killed in action on September 17, 1944 near\u00a0the Dutch castle Heeswijk, but in spite of that the American William\u00a0Burd jr. chose to become a US navy-pilot. Based on an aircraft carrier\u00a0he participated in hundreds of operations in Vietnam, back in the\u00a0sixties. On Thursday August 3, 2017 William Burd jr (74 years) visited\u00a0his father at the American Cemetery in Margraten.<\/p>\n

William (Bill) was here for the first time in 1971, now he was\u00a0accompanied by his wife Janice (70) and daughter Heather (42). He\u00a0also met Tammy and Scott Weidmann. Tammy is a niece of Bill and\u00a0works at the US-support base in Schinnen (NL). He also met for the\u00a0first time the adopter of Captain William Burd, Carli Nelissen from\u00a0Schijndel, 3 km away from castle Heeswijk.\u00a0Nine years ago Carli adopted the grave of Capt William Burd sr\u00a0because he was and still is fascinated by the American operations\u00a0during WWII, especially operation Market Garden around Arnhem\u00a0and Nijmegen. His special interest lies in the combat actions of the\u00a0501st PIR (Klondike) of the 101st ABN DIV (Screaming Eagles).\u00a0Together with Klondike-friends he simulates combat actions as a re-enactor.<\/p>\n

On September 17, 1944 captain William Burd and his men landed\u00a0near castle Heeswijk which was not the proper location. Some of his\u00a0men were injured during the dropping and they were transferred to\u00a0the castle. Burd stayed behind with them. The Germans located them\u00a0and in a fire fight Burd was killed. His helmet, with a bullethole in it,\u00a0and other of Burds\u2018 military possessions and documents are placed in\u00a0a special vitrine in 501 st PIR HQ in in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.<\/p>\n

Son William, born in 1943, never knew his father and hardly knew his\u00a0mother because she gave him away for adoption after the war. After\u00a0high school Bill jr. chose for a military career. After his service as a\u00a0navy pilot he studied law, but in the end flying stayed his biggest\u00a0passion, now as a civilian. \u201cThat was something else\u201d: he said. It was\u00a0like stepping from a Formula 1 race car into a citybus. Bill, Janice and\u00a0Heather live in the neighbourhood of Miami, Florida.<\/p>\n

After visiting Captain Burds\u2019 grave, Bill travelled together with his\u00a0family members and the adoptanter, for the first time to castle\u00a0Heeswijk where his father was killed in action. A local historian will\u00a0show them around and explain the history of the castle during WWII\u00a0and during the liberation.<\/p>\n
