The reception marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, held on Thursday 4 July 2026 in The Hague, celebrated the historic and enduring friendship between the United States and the Netherlands. During the event, attention was drawn to the shared values of freedom, democracy and international cooperation. The ambassador, Joe Popolo, emphasised the special historical bond, which dates back to the American War of Independence and the Netherlands’ early recognition of the young republic. Attention was also paid to the strong economic, cultural and diplomatic cooperation that links the two countries today. In his speech, the ambassador specifically mentioned the adoption programme in Margraten, which highlights the warm ties between America and the Netherlands.
